Samford adds Shorter to 2023 football schedule

Samford University has announced that they will be adding the Shorter Hawks to their football schedule for the 2023 season. The Bulldogs are set to host the Hawks on Thursday, August 31st at Seibert Stadium in Homewood, Alabama. This will be the first time that the two schools will be facing each other on the field.

Shorter Hawks compete in the Gulf South Conference of Division 2 football, but are set to move to the Conference Carolinas in 2025, after a year as an independent. The Hawks had a rough 2022 season, finishing with a 3-8 record and going 1-6 in Gulf South action. The team is led by Zach Morrison, who will be entering his fifth season as head coach.

Along with their matchup against the Shorter Hawks, the Samford Bulldogs will also have non-conference games against the Auburn Tigers on Saturday, September 16th. The Bulldogs will finish their season with a game against UT Martin, a member of the OVC/Big South, on Saturday, November 18th.

Samford 2022 performance

The Samford Bulldogs had a solid 2022 football season, finishing with a 7-5 overall record and going 5-3 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs had some impressive wins, including a 38-24 victory over the Wofford Terriers and a 30-20 win against the Chattanooga Mocs.

Their offense was led by quarterback Liam Welch, who threw for 3,388 yards and 28 touchdowns in the season. Wide receiver Montrell Washington was a standout player, with 1,174 receiving yards and 9 touchdowns. On the defensive side, linebacker Christian Robinson led the team with 94 total tackles.

However, the Bulldogs did have some setbacks, with losses to Southern Conference rivals Furman and Mercer. They also fell to East Tennessee State in a close game that ended with a score of 23-20.

Overall, the 2022 season was a positive one for the Samford Bulldogs, who will look to build on their success in the upcoming 2023 season.
